"View New Content" Feature

Thought I'll put this in a thread in case someone else was experiencing the same frustration.

Firstly, I never properly log out of SNW, I stay automatically signed in all the time. Whenever I come online, I directly check the "View New Content" feature to obviously see the latest posts and replies. But sometimes, like now for instance, there would be quite a list of unread things, I open a post and when I click on "View New Content" again for the rest, a message tells me there's nothing! But I haven't even read the other posts yet?!

Is there some time restriction on these posts? I know back in the days there used to be a field at the bottom of the page where you could go back as far as 3 weeks' worth of stuff. Don't want to go into the forum list all the time

Security Warning (6 May, 2011)

Over the past couple of days the site's root files were exploited by a code injector which infected several index files contained within sub directories on the site's server. This led to a warning being issued in certain browsers that the site was harmful to computers. Whilst the warning was valid, the risk was incredibly small to users. Over the past 8 hours I've been inspecting every corner of the site's server and have removed or edited any index pages that were infected with an iframe script. I have also replaced the source files for the forum, thus any files that had been comprimised have now been replaced.

The warning that is currently being shown by google in browsers such as Firefox and Chrome should be removed within the next 24 hours when the review I've requested has been carried out.

Unfortunately there is very little you can do as a site owner to prevent this kind of malicious attack, even with the latest security patches for the board and site source files, if someone wishes to exploit the site they will. The passwords for ftp and server access have been changed and this should prevent any further issues from cropping up. Rest assured that any preventative measures available to me have been carried out to prevent this problem in the future.

Thank you for your patience and I look forward to seeing you back on the site!

Cheers,

Website Progress (23 March, 2011)

To keep members and visitors informed of the site's progress I've decided to publish monthly figures showing how the site is performing. These will include post and topic counts, total members, website traffic stats and the current Alexa rank - Alexa being one of the leading website information companies offering webmasters stats on their sites.

Topics & Posts

Total Topics: 23,823

Total Posts: 262,665

Total: 286,488

Members

New Members (March, 2011): 35

Total Members: 15,369

Site Traffic (Page Views)

To Be Updated...

Alexa Rank

3 Month Average: 1,273,819 - An Increase Of 48,443!

Currently The Supernatural World's monthly average has been affected by the period of downtime last week. Thus, the current monthly rank on Alexa does not reflect actual traffic. This stat will be updated next month.

Over the past 12 months The Supernatural World has seen a huge increase in traffic with monthly page views close to 600,000! This has risen steadily over the past two years at which point the monthy page views was a mere 250,000. New member registrations have also risen steadily which reflects the amount of visitors to the site.

The Supernatural World now enjoys the position of being the internet's No.1 supernatural resource. A leader in supernatural and paranormal related news, articles and discussion, The Supernatural World has put itself firmly at the top.

This is, in the main, down to the members who take the the time to login daily and contribute to the vast archive of topics and discussions. Without the members we have and those who visit the site we would not be where we are today. So a huge thank you from me for all the effort you put in to making The Supernatural World the success it is today.

Senior Member Promotion (18 March 2011)

For several years the site has been promoting members to the Advanced Members group. This was never based on post counts, it was more a reward offered to members that the team felt deserved some form of recognition for their time and efforts on the site. The problem with that method was that it was based on personal choice by the team, this could lead to members being overlooked. To make the promotion fairer I have simplified it, thus, any member who reaches a post count of 500+ will be automatically promoted to the Senior Members group. With this promotion their username will appear as green in the online users list.

So if your name appears in green, congratulations and a huge thank you from all the team for your time, effort and contributions to the site.

Board Feature Changes (17 March, 2011)

With the recent board and blog upgrades several new features are now available to members. I'll list them below with a brief explanation of how to access/use them:

Favourite Quote:

This is a new field available in your profile which will also show in your profile details next to any posts you make.

Select...My Settings from the navigation bar at the top of the board index page...From the options page that appears select the Profile tab...The new Favourite Quote box appears at the bottom of the page. Simply add your quote and Save Settings.

Status Update Comments:

Members can now comment on the status of another member, assuming said member has set their status.

There are two ways of doing this, the first is by clicking on the Add comment tab under the member's status. The other method is by viewing the member's profile and commenting on their status there using the Add A Comment tab.

When member's have received comments on their status the number of comments will appear in brackets next to a new link...Show Comments.

Avatar Changes:

To keep the board looking sleak and tidy I've altered the permitted size for avatars...both in dimensions and actual file size. The new permitted sizes for avatars are:

Your avatar must be no bigger than 120 pixels by 120 pixels in size.

Uploaded avatars from your computer must be no larger than 100 KB.

The following file types are allowed: gif, jpg, jpeg, png

Please be aware that the board will scale down the image if its dimension are too big, however, members will have to make sure the file size falls within the permitted size.

Avatars can be changed by...My Controls...Profile...Change Avatar

Board Skin Redesign (16 March, 2011)

I'm sure most of you have noticed that the board colour scheme has changed significantly since the board upgrade on March 12. When the board was upgraded I also installed a new skin - Clean Cut. Whilst I felt it was a huge improvement on the default skin, I felt it needed a lot doing to it to make it easy on the eye. You may also have noticed that the red skin is now no longer available. Due to a lack of updates by its designer I felt it was time for it to be binned.

Currently I'm working on the icons, badges and images that come with this new skin. These are being replaced by icons that fit better with the skin, as apposed to the bold black that still exist. Whilst not all icons have been changed, the board index page is now showing the correct topic and category icons. The next point of call will be the black navigation bar at the top of the board page. I intend using a colour that is a little less bold but still allows for a nice transition between the blue navigation bar above and the white background of the main page. This may also be changed, whitespace is not something I'm very keen on.

The current board skin is now called SNW 3.15. As the board is upgraded the skin will reflect those changes by its version number. As edits to the skin are made the version number will change to reflect this.

This topic will be updated as further changes are made.

Blog Upgrade (15 March, 2011)

After considering a few requests to see the Blog feature return I've decided to re-install the Blog with the latest version available. As with the board upgrade, I hope the installation will be seamless and not cause too many issues with members and guests. Please be aware that whilst the work is being carried out the board may, or may not, misbehave a little. I hope to have the installation complete within the next few hours.

As with all upgrades, minor issues can sometimes crop up, whilst I'm aware of most of them there may well be a few issues I'm not aware of, if this is the case please don't hesitate to contact me.

Cheers,
